subterranean homesick alien
director: fakeplastcatherine

(Opening chords)
OPEN ON: a man (not necessarily Thom) exiting a building onto the sidewalk. It is morning in this city, but the sky is an electric blue. Everything else is in black and white, except for cracks in buildings and sidewalks, etc., from which seeps a neon green light. There are many people walking on the sidewalk. He merges into the flow of people.

"The breath of the morning. I keep forgetting. The smell of the warm summer air."
He approaches on his left a small kiosque. He cuts the line of people and gets a small coffee. Around him there are many businessmen, who shout (soundlessly) at him and seem to threaten him.

"I live in a town where you can't smell a thing, and you watch your feet for cracks in the pavement."
He passes a group of businesswomen. One is talking on her cell phone. There is a large crack in the pavement from which green light is emanating. They step on it, oblivious. As they do, rather than being blocked out, the light shines through them.

"Up above, aliens hover, making home movies for the folks back home."
In the artificially blue cloudless sky, several news helicopters hover. PANNING UP, we see these, as well as rows of identical buildings, all with reflective glass windows and air conditioning on every floor.

"Of all these weird creatures who lock up their spirits, drill holes in themselves, and live for their secrets."
Back on the street level, we pass many more people: a group of elderly women wearing fur coats and toting along several well dressed small children, some middle-aged men with slicked hair, and a young, pale woman wearing sunglasses.

"They're all uptight."
As the young woman walks by, she lifts her sunglasses, revealing a black eye. She looks directly at him. The bruise shines green. The man pauses, but she walks by without turning back. He turns around to watch her walk away, and people coming in both directions flow around him.

(Guitar)
He walks towards a bus stand just as a double decker tourist bus stops there. As he goes on board and pays, the camera moves to the second level, where he soon seats himself. We then switch back to the view of the man. There is apparently a school trip on top of the bus, since he is surrounded by children. A few chaperones are also present. They try to herd the children into their seats, but the kids keep getting up and leaning over the rail. The wind blows everyone's hair as we PAN AROUND to see the homogenous buildings and uniform street lamps which they are passing. Some of the kids radiate the green light slightly. One goes up to the chaperone with a cut finger; she wipes it away with a tissue and places a bandaid over the cut. The blood from the cut, including that which got wiped onto the tissue, is the neon green. We pan out to see everyone else on the bus again, and then look up to the sky. As we watch, we see dusk arrive, the sun go down, and it become night. PAN OUT again.

"I wish that they'd swoop down in a country lane, late at night when I'm driving."
The man is now in his small car. He is driving alone. We can see him from over his shoulder. As we watch, he fiddles with the radio dial, and leans back in his seat. He is no longer in the city; the landscape around him is country-side.

"Take me on board their beautiful ship, show me the world as I'd love to see it."
He sings along to this line. His car then approaches a stop sign. He slows down, and sees a car headed in the opposite direction facing him.

"I'd tell all my friends but they'd never believe me. They'd think that I'd finally lost it completely."
PAN DOWN to see the man's hands. There is a large slash across the back of the palm of one of them. Lots of green is oozing from it. While we are still watching his hand near the steering wheel, he gets out of the car offscreen.

"I'd show them the stars and the meaning of life."
He walks toward the other car, beaming a large smile and holding out his hand. He approaches the other car's open window. Inside is another man, about his age, dressed in a suit. The man watches him come near. He looks at the cut, then the man's face.

"They'd shut me away."
After a slight pause, the other man rolls up his window and drives away.

"But I'd be alright."
The man watches the other car drive away perfectly still. He then turns and walks quietly to his car.

"Alright, I'm alright, alright. I'm just uptight, uptight..."
He pulls his car back into the road and continues driving. We see the bright beams on the countryside through the windshield. The radio is off, and he drives simply and mechanically.

(Ending guitar parts)
Suddenly, as he is driving, a deer jumps out from the brush along the road. He tries to swerve to miss it, but hits it. The deer falls, and the car is bounced to the edge of the curve, then down a slight ditch. The man is slumped over the steering wheel. After a few seconds, he tries to move his head out. He lifts his left arms slightly, enough to find the door handle. After much effort, he gets the door open. His pushes/falls out the car. Outside, he tries to pull himself up, but can't use his legs. He manages to pull himself along by his arms. He moves towards the forest. As he nears the tree line, only a few yards from his car, he collapses. It is still for a few seconds. Then, from above, a massive beam of green light engulfs him. We do not see whatever space ship is hovering in the air above his body, only the beam as it lifts his limp body into the air. FADE OUT as his body moves upwards and offscreen.
